Lexus Reclaims #1 Spot in J.D. Power Dependability Study

According to the J.D. Power 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability StudySM (VDS), which was issued today, there are 186 problems per 100 (PP100) vehicles on average in the sector, an increase of 6 PP100 from 2022. The study looks at how 2020 model-year vehicles, including those with new technologies, are now performing in terms of quality, component replacement, and appeal. It assists automakers in designing and building better cars that will withstand the test of time and promote higher resale value. Higher performance is indicated by a lower PP100.

Vehicle Dependability Improvements

Mass market brands, with 182 PP100, are leading the industry's improvement for fewer issues, 8 PP100 lower than a year ago and 23 PP100 lower than for luxury brands (205 PP100). The difference between the two segments is the greatest in the study's 34-year history. It follows a pattern that started in 2016. The new technology that has been included in automobiles is the difference in reliability between the two groups. More technology is in premium products. It increases complexity and the inherent possibility of further issues.

According to Frank Hanley, senior director of auto benchmarking at J.D. Power, it is customary in the automotive business to introduce concepts and features by placing them in luxury vehicles first. Two of the leading studies in the sector, the J.D. Power Initial Quality StudySM (IQS) and the Vehicle Dependability Study, serve as a barometer for mass-market businesses wishing to embrace and integrate these technology elements into their portfolio. They confirm trends and illustrate how certain automakers are preventing problems from happening early on and throughout the ownership experience. Combined findings from the two studies can better inform automakers.

The 2020 U.S. Initial Quality Research was the first to assess the 3-year-old automobiles measured in this study. The top 10 brands in the VDS include six of the top 10 brands in the 2020 IQS. Starter battery failures, out-of-date maps, Android Auto/Apple Car Play issues, and voice recognition issues are some of the most deteriorated areas during the first 90 days and the third year of ownership. The rise in technological challenges highlights how over-the-air updates fix audio system problems and keeping their information current.
