Your windshield wipers should be replaced every six to 12 months, but you should still keep an eye on your windshield wipers to know when replacements are necessary. Here are a few signs to look for when you monitor your windshield wipers.
Damaged Rubber Blades
You should be checking your rubber wiper blades at least once a month for signs of damage or regular wear and tear. If the rubber is rough to the touch or if you notice any cracks or tears in the rubber, your wipers should be replaced soon.
Streaks On Your Windshield
If you use your windshield wipers and notice that they're leaving streaks behind, they're probably going bad and need to be replaced before said streaks start to affect your visibility.
Noisy Wipers
Windshield wipers that are going bad often make a lot of noise when they are used. If you hear loud squeaks or squeals when your windshield wipers move across your windshield, they should be replaced.
Rusty Metal
Finally, check the metal components of your windshield wipers for rust and other signs of damage. This is usually a sign that your windshield wipers are damaged to the point of breaking. A little corrosion probably won't affect your wipers too much, but it is a sign that your wipers are showing their age. Replace them as soon as possible, especially if they're more than six months old.
The good news in all of this is that it isn't very hard to replace windshield wiper blades. You can usually buy replacements at any automotive store and install them yourself. If you don't know how to do that or if you think your vehicle problems run deeper than some bad wipers, bring your car to South County Lexus. We can help determine what kind of windshield wipers you need and make any repairs that are necessary to keep your vehicle running smoothly and safely.
